The O'Neil Residence

2000 MALTA Grand Award Winner
Metro Atlanta Landscape Turf Association

The O'Neil's desire for their "sports" pool to be an architectural extension of their previously remodeled basement proved to be the greatest design challenge of this project. The pool is positioned in such a way as to be the center of the back yard. Thus, everything from the deck stairs and support post, existing retaining walls and even air conditioners had to be relocated. Also, due to the client's tendency to entertain, we centered the spa on the basement French doors. This allowed for the spa to be in close proximity to the house, thus extending its use during the winter months.

The other obstacle the site posed was a descending six-foot grade change from the basement's finished floor elevation. By installing a four-foot timber retaining wall and allowing the spa to have a two-foot waterfall, we were able to satisfy the grade challenge.

The planting scheme provided screening, softening of hardscape, and color. The neighbors were screened using a combination of Leyland Cypress, Tree Form Wax Myrtle, and Dawn Redwood. Instead of having concrete totally encircling the pool, we softened the space by adding a Meyers Zoysia lawn that adjoins the pool's back edge. In addition, a five-foot perennial border provides both color interest and transition prior to the four-foot retaining wall.

The Rollins Residence – Cobb County New Construction

1999 MALTA Grand Award Winner
Metro Atlanta Landscape Turf Association

A Watters & Associates Landscape design and build project at the Rollins residence in Kennesaw was named the 1999 MALTA Grand Award Winner in the best project under $25,000 category. Mrs. Rollins wanted a visible entryway to her front door and a private garden area she could enjoy. Watters and Chatham’s landscape plan included a front parking area screened by evergreen plants.

The garage doors were hidden by plantings designed to draw the eye elsewhere.

The Montanaro Residence

1998 ALCA Environmental Improvement Award of Merit
Associated Landscape Contractors of America

The complete transformation of a challenging landscape was the basis for the Montanaro residence project to win a coveted award from the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA). Watters & Associates Landscape provided master planning and contracting for grading, drainage, vehicular and pedestrian circulation, irrigation, planting, and landscape lighting. The results were spectacular. ALCA is a national trade organization representing 1,600 interior and exterior landscape maintenance, installation and design/build contractors and suppliers nationwide.

The project presented many challenges involving uneven elevations and irrigation. Behind the house, a multi-terraced wall was landscaped with a fountain and seasonal plantings. Several ponds and lakes were connected to solve drainage and irrigation problems on the site.
